Nobody Ever Got Fired For Buying … Based on Gartner Magic Quadrants

For many years, “Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM” was a well recognized truism in the technology industry. Times change, and while IBM remains a respected company, they are far from being the only game in town when it comes to vendor selection, in large part because of the emergence of the Cloud as the preferred shopping center for any and all technology.

Today, the first step that smart customers take when contemplating new IT is to review Gartner’s Magic Quadrants where they will find a comprehensive evaluation of leading service providers (SPs) and vendors. The recognized SPs and vendors are not only delivering superior technology, they also have the clearest vision for their offerings—visions that reflect their ongoing ability to satisfy evolving customer requirements. Gartner Magic Quadrants, published annually, represent the gold standard for technology evaluation and service provider ranking.

New categories for Gartner Magic Quadrants don’t come along that often. And when they do, it’s always because something big is happening in the IT sector that is changing the service delivery landscape dramatically. So, while some might take at face value the recent Amazon and Microsoft announcements that their Cloud Businesses are valued at $5B and $2B respectively, Gartner can be counted on to dig deeper in order to understand exactly what’s in those Clouds.

And what did they find this time around?  Certainly myriad applications that have migrated from traditional delivery models to the Cloud, but for the first time ever, Gartner identified technologies and service providers that are using the Cloud to dramatically change the landscape of the Disaster Recovery market. So much so that this high-growth segment and its leading providers warranted recognition in their own category, as seen in Gartner’s inaugural Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) Magic Quadrant.

From my perspective, this is a very important development as it sends a signal to the market that DRaaS is not only here to stay, but that it’s now the means by which progressive companies are handling their DR requirements. In its DRaaS market assessment, Gartner states, “By 2018, the number of organizations using disaster recovery as a service will exceed the number of organizations using traditional, syndicated recovery services.”

Six companies were identified in the DRaaS Market Quadrant as Leaders and Challengers, including Geminare partners NTT Communications and Cable & Wireless Communications’ Columbus Business Solutions. Congratulations to both on achieving such outstanding recognition.
