Hybrid Cloud Storage / Data Protection

Apr 21, 2015 1:00-1:40pm PT

Cloud Computing has rapidly risen to the forefront of the IT landscape, given the inherent flexibility, elasticity, and scalability it can provide to end users and IT organizations. With the increased overall adoption of the Cloud, Gartner expects total Cloud (including IaaS, SaaS, etc.) spend to increase to $244B (17% CAGR between 2013 and 2017). Given the continued explosion in digital content that is being created, consumed and distributed globally, data storage and protection is a logical component to move along with applications and infrastructure into the Cloud. According to MarketsandMarkets, the Cloud Storage market is expected to grow from $13.6B in 2014 to $56.6B in 2019 at a 33% CAGR. Other fundamental technological shifts which are driving the rapid adoption of Cloud-based storage & data protection solutions include:

  • The rapid growth in the volume and types of digital content (mostly unstructured data) created by emerging Web/Cloud applications: IDC estimates digital content will have grown by 300x between 2005 and 2020
  • The shift toward mobile computing: IDC expects more mobile devices/tablets than PCs in 2016 as tablet sales have seen a 97% CAGR between 2010 and 2014, and predicts 2.3B mobile internet users by 2017 – driving the data and associated storage requirements towards those endpoints

Given this explosion of data, the movement of apps & compute infrastructure into the Cloud and proliferation of endpoint devices, consumers, SMB’s and enterprises are aggressively moving archival and other data sets into the Cloud.

Hybrid Cloud storage/data protection options have also been gaining increased traction because enterprises want to maintain sensitive data in-house, and push other non-mission critical data into “cheap & deep” Cloud storage. Hybrid storage options also have the inherent advantages of lower latency and lower bandwidth usage given that the “hot” data can reside within the enterprise with high levels of performance. Regardless of where the data resides, appropriate levels of protection and recovery ability remain one of the biggest concerns for IT in today’s environment. Both enterprises and Cloud service providers must maintain proper backup and recovery solutions for data when it is in motion, in process or at rest. This panel will highlight the current and future trends for hybrid Cloud storage/data protection solutions.
